  1. Parentheses first: 2 + 3 = 5.
  2. Then 5 × 4.

Answer: 20

Example 2

7 + 32 =
  1. The exponent first: 32 = 3 × 3 = 9.
  2. Then 7 + 9.

Answer: 16
