Worked examples

Two examples

Example 1

A point is 2 to the left of the y-axis and 5 above the x-axis. What are its coordinates?
  1. Across first: 2 to the left, so x = −2.
  2. Then up: 5, so y = 5.

Answer: (−2, 5)

Example 2

A point sits on the x-axis, 4 to the right of the origin. What are its coordinates?
  1. x = 4. On the x-axis, y = 0.
