Worked examples

Two examples

Example 1

How far apart are (2, 5) and (9, 5)?
  1. The y-values are the same, so the points are straight across from each other.
  2. Subtract the x-values: 9 − 2 = 7.

Answer: 7 units

Example 2

How far apart are (3, −4) and (3, 2)?
  1. The x-values are the same: straight up and down.
  2. 2 − (−4) = 6. (4 below the axis and 2 above: 4 + 2.)

Answer: 6 units
