Example 1

Which is 3.47 in words?
  1. Read the whole number: three. Say “and” for the point.
  2. Read 47 as a number, then name the last place, the hundredths.

Answer: three and forty-seven hundredths

Example 2

Write in digits: five and nine thousandths
  1. Thousandths means three places after the point.
  2. Nine thousandths is .009: the zeros hold the tenths and hundredths places.

Answer: 5.009
