Two examples

Example 1

Round 6.473 to the nearest tenth.
  1. The tenths digit is 4. The digit to its right is 7: 5 or more, so round up.
  2. The 4 becomes 5, and every digit after it is dropped.

Answer: 6.5

Example 2

Round 12.96 to the nearest tenth.
  1. The tenths digit is 9. The digit to its right is 6, so round up.
  2. A 9 rounds up to 10: write 0 and carry 1, so 12 becomes 13.

Answer: 13.0
