Example 1

4.7 + 0.38 =
  1. Line up the points and write a zero: 4.70 + 0.38.
  2. Add as with whole numbers and bring the point straight down. The estimate, about 5, agrees.

Answer: 5.08

Example 2

12.5 + 3.75 + 6 =
  1. Every whole number has a point at the end: 6 is 6.00.
  2. Line up: 12.50 + 3.75 + 6.00.

Answer: 22.25
