Two examples

Example 1

In New York City the sales tax is 8.875%. What is the total for a lamp that costs $40.00?
  1. The tax: 40 × 0.08875 = 3.55.
  2. The total: $40.00 + $3.55.

Answer: $43.55

Example 2

In New York City the sales tax is 8.875%. What is the tax on a jacket that costs $64.00?
  1. 64 × 0.08875 = 5.68.

Answer: $5.68
