Two examples

Example 1

A thermometer is labeled every 10 degrees, with 5 small spaces between labels. The level is 3 marks above 20. What does it show?
  1. 10 degrees in 5 spaces: each mark is 2 degrees.
  2. 3 marks above 20: 20 + 6.

Answer: 26°F

Example 2

A number line has only 0 and 100 labeled, with 8 equal spaces. An arrow points to the 3rd mark. What number is it?
  1. 100 in 8 spaces: each space is 12.5.
  2. 3 × 12.5 = 37.5.

Answer: 37.5
