Example 1

Write as an improper fraction: 3 25
  1. Each whole is 55, so 3 wholes are 3 × 5 = 15 fifths.
  2. Add the 2 more: 15 + 2 = 17. Keep the denominator.

Answer: 175

Example 2

Write as an improper fraction: 4 16
  1. 4 × 6 = 24 sixths, plus 1 more: 25.

Answer: 256
