Two examples

Example 1

A number line from 0 to 1 is cut into 5 equal spaces. A point sits 3 spaces from 0. What number is at the point?
  1. Each space is 15.
  2. 3 spaces from 0 is 35.

Answer: 35

Example 2

A number line from 0 to 2 has each whole cut into 4 equal spaces. A point sits 7 spaces from 0. What number is at the point?
  1. Each space is 14, so the point is at 74.
  2. As a mixed number: 4 spaces make 1, and 3 more.

Answer: 1 34
