Example 1

Fill in the sign: 56 ___ 34
  1. Rewrite with the common denominator 12: 56 = 1012, and 34 = 912.
  2. Same size pieces, so compare the numerators: 10 is more than 9.

Answer: 56 > 34

Example 2

Fill in the sign: 23 ___ 812
  1. Rewrite with 12: 23 = 812.
  2. The numerators are the same.

Answer: 23 = 812
